Cashmere Goats

Cashmere goats are not a breed, but are a type of goat with high quality down. Any breed of goat can have individuals with cashmere, and these goats must be selectively bred to achieve quality cashmere. Our goats are descended from cashmere-bearing Spanish goats from Texas, feral Australian goats and New Zealand cashmere goats.

The goats are raised primarily for their fiber, which we comb out in spring when they start to shed. One or two male kids are raised for their meat, which makes excellent curry and stew.

The Kids

Kidding season is a special time. Few things are cuter than baby goats, especially baby cashmere goats.

The Boys

Our original buck is from a line of New Zealand cashmere goats. We kept one of his sons (shown to the right), whose mother died shortly after giving birth. He was bottle fed, so we are kinda attached to him. We also didn’t want to loose his mother’s genetics.

The boys can play rather rough, and they have their own pen. We built a cover over their feeding station to keep them (and us) dry when we feed them.
